Research FAQ

Evidence-based answers to common eSIM questions.

Technology

What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in device hardware. Carrier profiles are downloaded via QR code rather than physically inserted. Governed by GSMA SGP.22.
What is the GSMA SGP.22 standard?
GSMA SGP.22 defines Remote SIM Provisioning for consumer devices. It specifies how profiles are prepared, delivered, and managed on eUICC chips. Version 3.0 (2023) is current.
How secure is eSIM?
Profiles are cryptographically bound to device EID. eUICC achieves EAL4+ certification. Mutual authentication prevents MITM attacks. Profiles cannot be cloned.

Compatibility

Which devices support eSIM?
iPhone XS (2018)+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3+. Verify: Settings → About → EID (32-digit number confirms eSIM hardware).
Does carrier lock affect eSIM?
Yes. Locked devices may only accept eSIM from the locking carrier. Request unlock before using third-party eSIM plans.

European Coverage

Does eSIM work across all EU countries?
Regional plans cover all 27 EU member states. RLAH ensures domestic rates across member states for EU-regulated carriers.
What about Switzerland and the UK?
Outside the EU. Many plans include them. Verify your specific plan's coverage list before travel.

Troubleshooting

No service after activation?
Check: eSIM enabled → Data Roaming on → Airplane Mode toggle → Manual network selection → Restart → Contact provider.
Factory reset and eSIM?
Factory reset erases eSIM profiles. Check provider's reinstallation policy. Save QR code screenshots as backup.
